Green footprint

What is a Product Carbon Footprint?

A Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) measures the greenhouse gas emissions of a product across its entire life cycle, resulting in a CO2 equivalent. A carbon footprint at product level is one application of LCA methodology.

For our recycled filament and staple fiber yarns, we calculate the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) compared to virgin yarns, relying mainly on primary data rather than database estimates. This is based on the standards ISO 14040 and ISO 14044.

This data feeds into the calculation.

The entire production process is modeled using established LCA software. Based on the data above, direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions are calculated, resulting in a realistic carbon footprint for our products. We are happy to share our key findings, methodologies and figures as part of a closer collaboration.

Life cycle assessments are increasingly demanded by industry.

However, many companies see a major hurdle in the high cost of acquiring LCA software, the lack of data on upstream products, and insufficient internal resources. Hiring expensive service providers to calculate the LCA is also not an option for many companies.

Carl Weiske therefore offers an additional service around Life Cycle Assessment and calculates your Product Carbon Footprint across the entire value chain of the product – starting with the Carl Weiske yarns used.

Established LCA software

Calculation of customer-specific questions using established LCA software – more affordable than external service providers.

This is how our LCA calculation works.

  1. Contractual agreement including confidentiality and data protection provisions.
  2. Identification of the relevant production processes.
  3. Collection of all input data, if necessary also from suppliers, using individual life-cycle input forms.
  4. Modeling of the processes using established LCA software and calculation of the CO2 value by Carl Weiske.
  5. Preparation of a report with a realistic Product Carbon Footprint and a list of optimization potential.
  6. Final consultation.
  7. Regular updates of the Product Carbon Footprint.
